Towards the end of last year, the Lord started dealing with me about something while I was thinking about the new year. I usually get the word for every year which I think every Christian should do before facing the new year (not a collective one as a church but your personal word) because that is what you will stand on for the new year and will help you weather any storm/challenge that may come your way.
The first time the word rang in my spirit was during a prayer session in church and then all through the week. I kept hearing “Expectations”, so during the week I decided to know more about the word. As I was thinking about it, God asked me a question in my spirit “What are your expectations?”, “I thought for the new year or for my life?” I know my question sounds silly hey..but I thought if God is going to ask me about the new year, then he’d better get a big notepad because it might just take a while. So, I decided to state my expectations, on getting to the third or fourth one I got stuck, it was embarrassing to me because I was praying about them and I found out I ran out of sensible things, not that I didn’t have important things to ask but it all just disappeared from my head when it came to actually stating them.
I paused to really think about it, then God led me to a scripture – Proverbs 23:18 (AMP) “For surely there is a latter end [a future and a reward], and YOUR HOPE and EXPECTATION SHALL NOT BE CUT OFF” (emphasis mine). That struck me like never before, then God told me, the promise has always been there but Christians are not really laying hold of it. That is you should set your expectation every time, state them clearly so it can be measurable and watch God bring them to pass instead of generalizing the ability of God to give you a better life.
God wants you to be specific at the things you want, state them clearly so you can put your mind to them. God is well capable of doing exceeding, abundantly above all we can ask or think according to His power that is at work in us (Ephesians 3:20) but he wants you to be specific when it comes to your end of the bargain. You may have lots of things you want in your head but put them down, write them clearly – Habakkuk 2:2 (KJV) “…….Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth” that was God talking there…the vision could have been left in the head but there is a thing attached to writing things down, it brings remembrance even if your mind forgets, the paper won’t and it helps you stay focused. So, God told me to write down my expectations for the year and for my life, I sat down, thought clearly about what I really wanted to achieve in the year, most seemed big but that is why God wanted me to state them clearly to bring in His God factor.
Spend some time stating your expectations, don’t be afraid to raise your expectations beyond your comfort zone because He is able to DO. Don’t sell yourself short by underestimating the ability of God. If you are ever to make a mistake, make a mistake of overestimating the ability of God – the best part is..it’s no mistake at all. Get measurable goals set, clear expectations and hold on to Proverbs 23:18.
Numbers 14:28 “Now tell them this: ‘As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do the very things I heard you say.”
