Hearing From God

Contrary to popular belief, hearing from God is very easy. In the last post, I focused on looking onto the God on your inside for everything, for every answer, for every counsel. I will, with the help of the holy spirit be exploring how to draw on the this power we have on the inside. How to make it work for us. I also made a statement in the last post that if a man can master how to hear from God, he is made.

Firstly, I want you to know that a man has three component: the spirit, the soul and the body (1 Thessalonians 5:23). The body is the physical flesh (i.e. the meat), everything that is visible about a man is the body. The soul is the mind, the will and emotions (faculty in charge of feelings). You know when someone says something that hurts you, you feel the hurt but there is no mark on the body, that is the soul (also known as the mental faculty). The spirit of a man is that other man that is exactly like the one you see, only that you can’t see it. Using the most common example, you know in the movies when someone dies and their spirit (ghost) reappears? it is real. You will also notice that the spirit looks exactly like that of the body laying on the floor and he still recognizes everything as if he’s still alive, that is because he is, not just in the physical realm, the spirit and the soul are part of the Spirit-Man, what I’m saying is, when you die, you still live in the spiritual realm.

Every truth must be established by the scripture, Luke 16:19-31 tells a story of a certain rich man and Lazarus (the poor man), eventually they both died, but an interesting thing was that they still continued living, only that it was in another realm and they recognized each other, even the rich man was thirsty, all these goes to show there’s a life after this present one in the spiritual realm.

Coming back to the topic, God is a spirit (John 4:24), he made us in His likeness (Genesis 1:27), that is, we were created first as a spirit, before clothed with the flesh (Genesis 2:7). When Adam sinned (by eating the famous forbidden fruit), he died, but spiritually. The relationship between God and man was broken, they could not relate like before, where God would come and chat with man, man lost that spirit that was in tune with God.

At the point of salvation (the point when you received Jesus as your Lord and Savior), something happened that made you a new creature, the holy spirit came in (the spirit that was lost in the garden was restored and the relationship was reinstated) and fused with your spirit. The bible says the spirit of God and our spirit has become one (1 Corinthians 6:17), now that you have one spirit with God, if he God wants to speak to you, where would he speak from? from your inside. Most times when God speaks to you, it would be as if you’re the one talking to yourself because His spirit and your spirit are one.

The mistake many make now is trying to hear God from the outside, from the sky, you know like the stories and movies. While God does speak audibly from the outside, it is very rare and in most cases it is to people that are spiritually inactive. God constantly talks to his people, but in a still, gentle voice on the inside. The reason many don’t hear him is because they haven’t been paying attention or spending enough time listening to their spirit. There are avenues/channels God uses to speak to us, namely: the inward witness (Roman 8:14), through the holy spirit, through His Word (reading and meditating on His words), through dreams and visions, through his prophets (the men of God i.e. evangelists, pastors, teachers, prophets and apostles) and of course through the very rare audible voice. Exploring this would be too much for a post, I’ll be going more into details in the next post “How God Speaks”.

In all these, the most important thing is what you hear from God for yourself, never replace what you got from God for yourself for what others got from God for you. Every believer has equal right to hear from God (John 10:27-28), so trust the God on your inside, spend time with him and remember to be still and quiet so you can hear from him because he is not imposing.
