I know you know the golden rule; many can quote it, even though they do not know where it is in the scripture. This is a very popular card to pull to use but I encourage you still read through as you may see it in a new light.
Matthew 7:12 “Therefore all things, whatever you desire that men should do to you, do even so to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Right there is the golden rule often quoted by many. But I want draw your attention to something there, it says “Therefore in all things….” This means everything no matter how little or unimportant it may seem.
I was in a car with one of my mentors someday, she was driving and was about to make a turn into a street, there was no stop sign or anything on our side of the road, so you will have to wait till there is no car coming or somebody stops for you to make your turn. She made a statement that sent a strong message to my spirit, she said she would not need to wait for the traffic to clear for her to make her turn, she said she expects someone to stop for her because she does that for others. The next car stopped and signaled for her to make her turn, and then she told me it always works, though I knew this but saw it in a new light. You may think it is unimportant; it really does matter even in little unimportant things.
It does not only have to be in the big things like adultery, gossip or gifts, it spreads across everything we do every day. Jesus was simply saying there that what you sow is what you reap. Sometimes it may just be to pick up your phone and call a friend to check up on them, to simply tell them you love them, It may be a simple ‘hello’ text. It may be to pay for someone’s groceries or item in the store, it may be just a hug, or may be having enough patience to give way to another driver that wants to make a turn like the example I shared, or it may be to just pray for someone. The person may not be able to return the favor but it will come back to you in another way, or through someone else or maybe even through that same person sometimes later. The same is true for the opposite, if you treat others badly, it will come back to you. It is a principle Jesus himself told us.
A man was driving home from work one raining day, he saw a pregnant woman struggling in the rain, and he decided to give her a lift. After he had dropped her off, God revealed to this pregnant woman that the man that just helped her has been married for six year and they have been unable to have a baby, he told her to pray for him. Who had done who a favor? In every little thing, always remember the Golden rule.
