The Thing About Church

We were on our way from church the past week when this girl (like a sister to me) opened to this “youth’s” definition of a church, i.e. how many think church is. It was defined that “a church is a place you go, sit and be bored for one or two hours doing the same routine”. I could relate well with this because I have spoken to many people about coming to church and when they open up to me, all they say is that they are tired of going to church because it is boring. It is always the same thing every time, some will even say they would rather sit at home to worship God in their room because they know God is everywhere even in their room, which is a valid point and they should do but is it proper to substitute it for going to worship in a church?

Firstly, the church is not a building, the church is the people in it. God does not dwell anymore in temples, i.e. buildings (Acts 7:48, Act 17:24). He dwells in the hearts of men (believers) and when we go to church, God is there because we brought him there. Do not look at the church as the building but as the people inside the building. If people would go with the same wrong thinking, then there would be no church, and the building would be no different from an event center.

Hebrews 10:24-25 — “And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities • Not forsaking or neglecting to assemble together [as believers], as is the habit of some people, but admonishing (warning, urging, and encouraging) one another, and all the more faithfully as you see the day approaching.”

That right there is what the church is about.

It is true that God is everywhere and you can and should worship him in your room every day but there is an anointing that goes with coming together as a unit (church). We encourage ourselves, and we challenge ourselves to grow. The believers in the bible met every day. When the holy spirit came, it came to the church, on Jesus’ command that they should be “together”.

I know many see church as being a routine, see it as an order. Imagine you going to a church and everything just happens anyhow. Do not go to church with that attitude of routine, rather go with the excitement of fellowshipping with believers like you and with God. Go even a step further by serving in the church in any capacity, that is how to get the best out of the church and the power that is with it.

If you’re looking for a reason to go to church and you seem not to have one, how about this for a reason “Because the bible says so”

Give the Holy Spirit room to minister to you about Church, let him guide you on where to go to fellowship.
