Tradition or Truth

We all have our beliefs, we base our lives on these beliefs, which is why it is very important to check our beliefs because our lives depend on them. We have to as often as possible check our belief system to know if we are still on the right path or in err. Ask yourself why you believe what you believe.

A woman was asked by her husband why she cuts potatoes in a particular way, she was so sure it’s the best and only way to cut them. She told him that is how it is done, and referred him to her mother so he could confirm from her. When he called the mother, she told him it’s true it’s the best and only way, she told him she learnt it especially from her own mother (grandmother to the wife). When he called and asked the grandmother why it was the best and only way, she simply told it was neither the best nor the only way but she chose to cut them that way because her cooking pot then was too small at the time.

Tradition is something that is passed down from generation to generation or simply out the ways of man (rules and principles). Many have based their lives on what they have been told by their folks, this can be good mostly and might have sustained people for ages but what is it really based on? I was once told if you cut out the one of the parts of a chicken (I think it’s the stomach), you have to breathe on it three times for it to be delicious. Many would find it funny but I really believed it because my mom and sisters does it, till one day at an exhibition my department organised. I cut out that part, washed it and didn’t breathe on it and it was as delicious as ever.

Same is true with our beliefs, we tend to believe things people says is true, instead of the truth itself which is the word of God. We esteem high some bunch of religious traditions or rules and never really bothered to find out what God really said about them. We believe it because our friends, colleagues, parents or pastors said it is the truth without any scriptural backing. This is how you know tradition, if you cannot establish it from the scripture (bible), it is the tradition of men. Check your beliefs and try to establish them with the word of God, if you cannot find anywhere yet in the bible it is, throw it away. Even if your pastor says something and you cannot find it in the scripture, don’t believe it because these are the things that limiting God in your life (the things you believe).

Mark 7:13 – “Thus you are nullifying and making void and of no effect (the authority) the Word of God through your tradition, which you (in turn) hand on. And many things of this kind you are doing”

Stop making the Word of God of no effect in your life, believe only what it says you should because your life depend on it.
